Consulting CMO for Law Firms

Fractional CMO for Law Firms, Accountable to Signed Cases

Most firms don't have a dedicated Marketing Leader but GLP's Consulting CMO engagement gives you access to top level strategic thinking and budget decisions along with oversight of vendors. We also handle SEO and AI search, all on a monthly retainer.

In short

A fractional CMO for a law firm is a part-time chief marketing officer who owns the strategy, the budget and the vendors without a full-time executive salary. At GLP this is our Consulting CMO engagement: we set the plan, run SEO and AI search, oversee paid media and intake, and report what each channel costs per signed case.

Why Firms Hire One

Marketing without an owner

For a typical growing firm there will be an SEO agency, someone managing Google Ads, a web developer, some directories they list themselves in and an intake team that handles new leads. Each vendor reports separately and independently through different channels using their own metrics. No one gets paid to ask what matters most to partners: Which activities result in signed cases and which ones should we stop spending on?

Hiring a full-time CMO solves that, but it is a senior salary, and the hire still needs specialists under them. A law firm marketing consultant can write a plan, but plans tend to sit in a folder when no one is accountable for running them.

That gap's costs show up in little things too. Two suppliers bid for the same keywords. A landing page gets redone while the phone goes unanswered at 6 PM. Budgets from January stick around into October even though one channel stopped signing cases in May.

There is a fractional CMO who sits in the middle. You get high level judgment and responsibility but only part time; meanwhile, people who already have experience with legal marketing end up doing the work.

What's Included

What GLP's Consulting CMO owns

This is what you will see on our get started page for the Consulting CMO plan; everything related to SEO and AI search work is included.

  • 01

    Marketing strategy and plan

Deciding which practice areas and markets to grow business in, figuring out which marketing channels suit clients who search for your services and deciding the sequence of doing that work. Writing this all down and agreeing on goals with partners.

  • 02

    Budget allocation

How much goes to SEO, paid search, content and everything else, reviewed monthly and moved toward what signs cases.

  • 03

    Paid media oversight

Google Ads and Local Services Ads managed or overseen against cost per signed case, with search terms and negative keywords reviewed regularly.

  • 04

    Intake and conversion

Call answer rates, form response times and lead-to-consultation rates. A good campaign feeding a weak intake process is still a weak campaign.

  • 05

    Vendor management

Your other agencies, developers and directories, held to one standard of reporting. We keep what works and say plainly what doesn't.

  • 06

    Reporting tied to signed cases

A performance dashboard and pipeline attribution, so each lead source traces to consultations, signed cases and fees. Weekly strategy calls and reporting.

It makes sense to hire a full time CMO when a company already has a big in-house team to lead every day. Until that time, most companies do better with part time senior leadership and specialists who really understand legal search. If you already have a strong marketing person on staff, a fractional CMO can sit above them and take charge of strategy.

How It Runs

How a Consulting CMO engagement works

Each step is something you can check.

  1. Strategy call

We have a free call to discuss your practice areas, markets that interest you, your current vendors and also the value of a signed case for you. We also let people know if a smaller engagement would be better suited.

  2. Access and audit

We look at your analytics reports, Google Ads and Local Services Ads, Search Console performance data, call tracking metrics, customer relationship management (CRM) or intake logs, and overall site performance. Through our audit we identify where there is wasted budget spending and where there are gaps in measurement.

  3. Measurement fixed first

Tracking calls by source along with tracking of leads submitted through different forms and the ability to mark which leads have actually signed: until that feature is ready, any advice about spending budgets is just a guess.

  4. The plan

Channels, budget split, targets and who does what, including your existing vendors. The partners approve it before money moves.

  5. Run, review, adjust

We manage SEO and AI search directly as well as oversee work with paid media partners, intake and other vendors. We have weekly strategy meetings and we adjust budgets to focus on channels where you get new cases signed up.

People and Software

The Consulting CMO and the CMO Agent

GLP offers two things with "CMO" in the name, and they are different.

The Consulting CMO is the human engagement on this page. GLP's team sets your strategy, makes the budget calls with you, runs search and holds the other vendors to account. The founder quote we work by: "Every marketing dollar should trace back to a signed case. When one doesn't, we change the plan." (Matt Khorsandi, Founder & CEO)

The CMO Agent is GLP's AI software. It connects to your ad, analytics and call-tracking accounts so partners can ask questions like "what did a signed case cost from Google Ads last month?" and get the answer from live data. Firms that want visibility into operations past intake can add operational intelligence.

You can use the Agent with or without the engagement. Many firms want both: people who make the calls, and software that keeps everyone looking at the same numbers.

Is It a Fit?

Who this works for, and who it doesn't

Usually a good fit

  • Firms with two or more marketing vendors and no one senior coordinating them.
  • Partners who can't say what a signed case costs by channel.
  • Firms spending on paid search and unsure how much of it is wasted.
  • Firms adding a practice area or a new market and needing a plan before spending.
  • Firms that want to show up in AI answers from Google, ChatGPT and Claude, not only in blue links.

Probably not yet

  • A solo practice with a small budget. A focused local SEO engagement usually does more.
  • Firms that only want a one-time plan with no one accountable for running it.
  • Firms not ready to track which leads sign. The engagement depends on that data.

Choosing One

Questions to ask any fractional CMO

  1. How will you measure success? Look for cost per signed case by channel. Rankings, traffic and leads are inputs.
  2. Have you worked with law firms? Legal search, bar advertising rules and intake are their own world. Ask for examples in your practice area.
  3. Who does the work? Some fractional CMOs only advise. Find out who runs SEO, ads and content, and who checks their work.
  4. Who owns the accounts? Your ad accounts, analytics and website should stay in your firm's name.
  5. What happens in the first 30 days? A good answer starts with access, an audit and measurement, not with new spend.
  6. How do we leave? Ask about notice periods and contract length before you start.

Be on the lookout for two red flags. The first one is a fractional CMO who always recommends his or her own agency for each marketing channel and doesn't show numbers. The second flag is a proposal where spending goes up before anyone has even confirmed if people actually get through to phones. Both of these are common and cheap to spot right from the very beginning of a conversation.

Fractional CMO for law firms: common questions

Can't find what you're looking for? Talk to our team.

What does a fractional CMO do for a law firm?

Has marketing plan ownership but isn't a full time hire. This means developing overall strategy and budgets for different channels, overseeing agency work and team members who execute plans, monitoring whether leads convert into consultations, and then reporting back to partners about cost per signed case for each channel.

Is a fractional CMO the same as a law firm marketing consultant?

They overlap. A consultant usually advises and hands over recommendations. A fractional CMO is accountable for running the plan month to month, including the budget and the vendors. GLP's Consulting CMO engagement is the second kind, and our team also does the SEO and AI search work directly.

How is the Consulting CMO different from the CMO Agent?

The Consulting CMO is a people engagement: GLP's team sets your strategy, runs search and oversees the rest of your marketing. The CMO Agent is our AI software that connects to your marketing accounts and answers questions from live data. Firms can use the Agent alongside the engagement or on its own.

How is a fractional CMO paid?

We charge on a monthly retainer at GLP. Fees vary depending on your specific market and practice areas as well as how many channels we oversee. Ad spend gets charged separately by Google and other platforms. We give you a quote after having a free strategy call with you.

Will you replace our current agency?

That's not always the case. A part of our job is to oversee vendors. If your PPC agency or web developers perform well, we keep them and treat them just like others in terms of signed-case reporting. If they don't perform well we let you know why and suggest alternatives for us to use instead.

What size of firm is this for?

Firms that invest enough in marketing where different channels matter and have more than one person or vendor working on marketing should consider this. Very small firms often get more benefit from focusing on SEO at first and we'll mention that as well during the meeting.
