Personal Injury Marketing
Personal Injury Lawyer Marketing, Measured in Signed Cases
After a crash happens, people try to find information, they consult AI tools, read reviews, and contact whomever responds. We design and implement channels that reach them through SEO and Local Services Ads for example, plus intake, and we evaluate each dollar based on one metric: how much it costs to sign that case.
In short
Personal injury lawyer marketing is everything a PI firm does to be the first call after an accident: SEO and AI search, Google Local Services Ads and paid search, the Google Business Profile and reviews, referral relationships, and intake that answers at any hour. It works when every channel is judged by the same number, cost per signed case.
Where personal injury cases come from
No single channel carries a PI firm for long. Here's what each one does well, what it costs you in time or money, and how we use it.
SEO and content
Organic search is the slowest channel to build and usually the cheapest per case once it works. The pages that earn cases are specific: "truck accident lawyer" plus a city, "how long do I have to file an injury claim in California," "what is my case worth." Our personal injury SEO service covers the rankings side in full. On this page, SEO is one part of the budget.
AI search
People who have been in accidents are asking Google AI Overviews, Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity about what to do next and if they need legal help. These summaries refer to just a few sources. Law firms that provide clear answers to typical questions that have been reviewed by lawyers, present consistent information online and list specific names of lawyers do better at being among those sources. More information can be found at AI SEO for law firms.
Google Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads show above the regular ads with a Google Verified badge, and you pay per lead instead of per click. Google checks your license and runs background checks before the ads go live. Placement depends on factors Google lists in its own help pages, including how close you are to the searcher, your review score and count, and how quickly you respond. Missed calls hurt, which makes LSAs as much an intake test as an ad buy.
Paid search (PPC)
Search ads target users as soon as they search for something relevant and allow you to control your message, where you show it and when you display it. PI clicks are costly generally speaking. Loose accounts can quickly suffer from wasted clicks: broad matches pulling in job hunters, ads running at times when no one is answering or landing pages loading slowly on mobile devices. Details about our law firm PPC are available on that page.
Google Business Profile and reviews
The map pack is where many "near me" searches end. Having a complete profile with the right categories, actual offices that you can point to and photos along with an ongoing steady stream of client reviews is cheap and continues to pay dividends. Reviews also affect rankings for LSA and the way that AI summarizes what customers say about a company. More on local SEO for law firms.
TV, radio and billboards
Outdoor and broadcast ads raise brand recognition but cost a lot of money to be effective. People search for a company after seeing an ad on billboards. If you do advertise, give each campaign a unique tracking number and monitor branded searches using Search Console so you can see how much spending has really worked.
Referrals and medical providers
Strongest cases that a PI firm receives often come from past clients, attorneys, and medical providers. Fee-sharing with another lawyer is governed by the ABA Model Rule 1.5(e) standard as well as the version that applies in your own state. Payments to people who aren't lawyers for recommendations are usually not allowed, so this kind of relationship works through service: they get quick updates, clean records requests, and happy returning clients.
Intake speed
Each channel ends with either a phone call or a form. If no one answers at 9 PM on Fridays, all the money spent goes to waste because there is no result. We also evaluate intake before deciding to spend more money; we look into after hours coverage, responsiveness of web forms, texts left when calls miss, and follow up actions for leads during the coming week.
Call tracking
Without tracking, all channels seem to be performing well. With dynamic number insertion you get different numbers for each visitor from different sources and calls are recorded and tagged according to their results too. Forms also record which landing page they were on along with what referred them. The number in your Business Profile and footer remains constant; this keeps consistency across everything for your contact information.
How we build a personal injury marketing plan
The order matters. Spending more before tracking and intake are fixed just buys more leads you can't measure or answer.
-
Audit tracking and intake
We look at tracking calls, source of forms, customer relationship management (CRM) stages and also coverage during off hours. Then we set up a baseline cost per signed case for channels that you already operate.
-
Fix the foundation
Google Business Profile, reviews process, site speed on mobile, and a landing page for each case type you want more of.
-
Buy speed while SEO builds
Local Services Ads and tightly scoped search campaigns for the highest-value searches in your market, limited to the hours someone can answer.
-
Build the long-term channel
Practice and city pages, answers to the questions injured people ask, and attorney-reviewed content that search engines and AI tools can cite.
-
Review monthly, move the money
We compare costs per signed case by channel each month and allocate budgets towards channels that sign up cases. If channels fail to meet expectations in terms of costs versus results, those channels will see cuts.
Advertising rules for personal injury firms
Rules vary from state to state and these ads about injuries are carefully reviewed by both bar regulators and by other lawyers too. We design all our campaigns based on these rules.
- ABA Model Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading statements about a lawyer's services. No "we'll get you maximum compensation," no implied promises about results, in any language the ad runs in.
- Past results, settlements and verdicts appear only when you supply them, with the disclaimer your state requires placed next to the figure.
- Model Rule 7.3 prohibits live, person-to-person solicitation of a specific person for a fee. Some states add waiting periods for written contact after an accident; the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Florida's 30-day rule in Florida Bar v. Went For It, Inc. (1995), and federal law sets a 45-day waiting period after air carrier accidents.
- Generally speaking, Model Rule 7.2(b) bars paying people who recommend you. Advertising and generating leads can be paid for but only within the limits that are specified both in the rule itself and in the comments to it.
- Some states require that ads be filed or reviewed (states like Texas and Florida for example). Also, "Attorney Advertising" labels or saved copies of previous ads are sometimes required. We embed these steps into the workflow.
- We are a marketing firm, not your ethics counsel. Final approval of every ad and page stays with your attorneys.
Measuring cost per signed case
Reporting on cost per lead is pretty straightforward and easy to manipulate. On the other hand, figuring out the cost per signed case is more difficult but gives you the information that matters most.
It's straightforward really: just divide total spending on a channel during a given time frame by the number of cases signed from leads sourced through that channel. Getting good data and reliable information is really the hard part.
- Source on every lead. Track tracking numbers by different channels; capture information about landing pages and referring sites too. Also have a rule for labeling visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity as well as Claude and other AI tools.
- Every lead gets an outcome. Your intake team assigns each lead as signed, declined, not a case or no contact. Without this you can't distinguish which channels are busy and which ones generate profit.
- Value per case is important, not just the number of cases. Trucking cases and minor soft tissue claims don't have equal value. Where you can, measure fee value by source so that if a channel signs fewer but bigger cases, they get credit for that.
- Let enough time pass. PI cases take months to get signed and even longer to work through. Judge SEO results quarterly and paid channels by monthly performance; you should expect things to even out with time going on.

A personal injury firm we rebuilt
Burg & Brock is a personal injury and wrongful death firm in the Los Angeles area. Until 2026 its website was one landing page.
The new website now includes crashes involving cars and trucks as well as motorcycles and ride sharing services, dog bites, burns, falls, and wrongful deaths. It has around 127 pages that pair cities with specific practice areas. Most clicks with a reported search term continue to be due to searches for the firm's name rather than search terms directly related to their practice. The case study does not claim any calls, leads, or signed cases but does show what a complete rebuild of a PI firm means in terms of search visibility and nothing else.
Google Search Console clicks for the periods shown. Individual results vary, and past results don't guarantee future outcomes. See all case studies and our earnings disclaimer.
Personal injury marketing: common questions

How much should a personal injury firm spend on marketing?
There's no honest single number. Start from the other end: what a signed case is worth to you on average, how many more you can handle each month, and what you can afford to pay to sign one. That target cost per signed case, times the cases you want, sets the budget. Our post on building a law firm marketing budget walks through it, and the ROI calculator runs the numbers with your own inputs.
Is SEO or PPC better for personal injury lawyers?
They do different jobs. Paid Search and Local Services Ads bring your company to people's attention quickly; you pay per click or per lead and the cost goes up if competition is fierce. Search engine optimization takes months to achieve results though and you don't pay anything when people visit your pages. Generally speaking, most PI firms use paid channels for very pressing searches and allow organic ranking scores to grow. Then they gradually reallocate budgets as SEO picks up more work.
Are Google Local Services Ads worth it for a personal injury firm?
Often, yes, as one channel among several. You pay per lead rather than per click, the Google Verified badge (formerly Google Screened) sits at the top of the page, and Google runs license and background checks before you can run them. The catch is ranking: Google weighs things like your distance from the searcher, your reviews and how quickly you respond, so a firm that misses calls slides down. Track LSA leads to signed cases like any other source and dispute leads that don't fit.
Can we pay chiropractors or medical providers for referrals?
Most states don't. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) bars giving anything of value to someone for recommending a lawyer, with narrow exceptions such as a reciprocal referral agreement that is not exclusive and is disclosed to the client. Some states go even further. For instance, California prohibits both runners and cappers through statute. Work well and communicate quickly, build strong relationships with providers and check every arrangement against relevant state rules or ethics counsel.
How fast should we respond to a new injury lead?
Responding quickly is important at any time of day. People who have been in accidents often contact multiple firms and the first firm that responds has an advantage. That's why we consider what happens when people call before we spend more money on advertising: how quick you respond to calls during late hours, how promptly you return web form submissions, whether missed calls receive a text message, and how many potential leads do not hear anything back at all.
What's the difference between personal injury marketing and buying leads?
Marketing builds channels your firm owns, like your site, your Business Profile and your reviews. Buying leads rents someone else's. Lead vendors can work, but quality varies, the same lead may go to several firms, and the ABA's comments to Rule 7.2 say a lead generator must not recommend the lawyer and its ads must not mislead. Our post on personal injury lead generation covers how to judge vendors.
