In short
SEO for law firms works on ranking their websites so that they show up for search terms that people really use who might be looking for legal help. More and more frequently this means having content cited in the AI answers from Google, Claude, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. When done right, law firm SEO involves local rankings, landing pages about specific practice areas and cities as well as pages with content designed to be quoted. The aim is a steady stream of real signed cases and measured by lead volume and revenue, not just clicks or traffic for show.

How law firm SEO works, from crawl to signed case
There are six different things that all rely on each other. Strong content that isn't indexed properly on a slow site doesn't get anywhere. Fast sites without reviews also lose out in the map pack. Here's what each piece entails and what we look into.
Technical SEO: a site Google can read
Technical work comes first because anything else depends on it. We crawl the entire site like Googlebot does and we then check against what Search Console reports as being indexed against what should actually be there. Law firms often run into similar problems: pages for different cities competing with each other, practice pages very hard to find (four clicks down), old URLs that don't work anymore and return 404s because they were redesigned and those URLs no longer work, and also pages built using widgets or page builders which send big chunks of code to phones.
- Indexing and crawl paths. XML sitemaps that list only the pages you want found, correct canonical tags, single-hop redirects and no orphan pages.
- Mobile speed. When most people look for a lawyer they do so via mobile. We test using Google's Core Web Vitals including loading speed, responsiveness and stable layouts and we fix anything that doesn't pass muster.
- Structured data. We mark up the firm as LegalService and mark each lawyer as a Person. We put BreadcrumbList on every page and we add FAQPage only if questions are visible. The markup has to match exactly what the user sees.
- Crawler access for AI search. A robots.txt that lets Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity) reach the pages you want quoted.
On-page SEO: one page, one job
Every search that's worth winning results in building one page to address it directly. "Car accident lawyer in Riverside" and "what is my car accident case worth" come from different times and different individuals, so they each get their own page. On-page work covers the title tag and H1, an opening paragraph that answers the question, headings that follow how people phrase it, links from related pages, and a next step that works with one tap: the phone number and a short form.
If pages on the same website compete for the same keywords then they split up their signals and often end up ranking lower. As part of every audit we create a map that shows which keywords each page targets, so that no single URL pursues the same keywords as others on the site.
Content by practice area
The majority of growth for our case studies comes from content. Westview Law, an employment firm in Los Angeles, picked up most of their new clicks after their website overhaul in 2026 due to articles about getting fired because of work restrictions and also after using Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave. The most clicked page for Burg & Brock after their home page is one that discusses average settlement amounts for car accidents in California.
Good legal content answers the question in the first paragraph, then adds what a lawyer would: the deadline, the statute, the court, what happens next. An attorney at your firm reviews it before it goes live. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines put legal topics in the Your Money or Your Life category, and your state's advertising rules apply to every page. So we write with your attorneys, not around them. More on our legal web content process.
Local SEO and Google Business Profile
The map pack typically appears above organic results when searching for "lawyer near me" and "[practice] lawyer [city]". Google's own help page on local ranking says that local search results rely mostly on relevance, proximity and how well known the business is. You can't physically relocate your office near each and every person who searches for something, but you do have control over most of the rest.
That means picking the right main category, filling out a detailed profile, having a listing only at real, staffed offices (not virtual offices according to Google guidelines), getting consistent reviews from real clients, matching names, addresses and phone numbers in different directories, and having a page about each office on your own website. Details are on our page on local SEO for law firms.
Links and digital PR
Links from other sites remain important just like votes do. For law firms, the most valuable links are local and related to law: such as bar associations, local newspapers, community groups that you actively participate in and directory websites like Avvo, Justia and FindLaw. Timely stories will also be valuable. Burg & Brock's work for 2026 involved a press release on California's SB 371 concerning ride sharing insurance. That is an example of a timely story a reporter could pick up.
We do not buy links or participate in any kind of link network; according to Google's anti spam policy paid links that transfer ranking credit are considered link schemes. Cleaning up after getting hit with a manual action is much more costly than what those links would have been worth in the first place.
AI search: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity
Today many people get answers from AI for legal questions before they look at any lists of links. In SEMrush data from fall of 2026 we saw that for all the searches we track under "law firm SEO" that receive at least 200 monthly searches in the US, Google showed an AI Overview for 104 out of those 113 searches. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode along with ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity all read pages of websites and frequently refer to them.
Google's Search Central page on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and no special markup is needed. In our work, four things make a page more likely to be quoted: a short, direct answer near the top, firm facts that match everywhere they appear (site, Business Profile, directories), named attorneys with their credentials, and enough specific detail to be worth citing. We check where your firm appears in AI answers for the questions that matter in your market and track it month to month.

Law firm SEO by practice area
The mechanics are the same in every practice. The person searching isn't. Here's what changes, with links to how we handle each one.
- Personal injury. Crowded map packs and expensive ads in nearly every metro. Rankings come from city-plus-injury pages and honest answers about settlements and deadlines. See personal injury SEO, the full channel mix in personal injury marketing, and our post on personal injury lead generation.
- Criminal defense and DUI. Urgent, local and often after midnight. One page per charge, written for the courthouse where the case will be heard. See criminal defense SEO.
- Family law. Emotional, private and county by county. Plain answers on custody, support and timelines matter more than legal vocabulary. See family law SEO.
- Estate planning and probate. Slower research, often by adult children comparing firms for a parent. Depth and trust win here. See estate law SEO.
- Employment law. People look for their own issues rather than just looking to lawyers: "fired after medical leave," "employer won't accommodate restrictions." That's where Westview Law's growth came from. See employment lawyer SEO.
- Lemon law. Searches turn on state statutes, makes and models, and repair attempts. See lemon law SEO.
- Immigration. Clients look into immigration matters in multiple languages and are worried about fraud. They require very different kinds of assistance depending on whether they seek help with a visa, green card, or removal cases. Check out our immigration lawyer SEO page.
Law firm SEO in your market
We work with law firms across the United States and Canada from our office in West Hollywood, California. Local SEO happens one market at a time: the counties and courts you cover, the firms already in the map pack, and how people in that city phrase their searches. A Houston PI firm and a Seattle family law practice need different pages even when the work behind them looks alike.
See every market on our areas we serve page, or go straight to Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Miami or Seattle.

Westview Law is an employment firm in Los Angeles. We rebuilt its site at 95 pages in late May 2026, and Google clicks went from 166 in March to May to 1,559 in June to August. Burg & Brock is a personal injury and wrongful death firm in the Los Angeles area. Its one-page site became more than 250 pages in English and Spanish, and clicks for June to August went from 452 in 2025 to 1,774 in 2026. Most of Burg & Brock's clicks with a reported search term still come from searches for the firm's name, and neither study makes a claim about leads or cases.
Figures are Google Search Console clicks for the periods shown. Clicks aren't clients. Individual results vary, and past results don't guarantee future outcomes. See our earnings disclaimer.

How long law firm SEO takes
Most firms see early movement within the first few months. New domains take longer. Four things set the pace:
- How much trust the domain has already built with Google.
- How competitive the practice and the city are. Personal injury in Los Angeles is a different race from estate planning in Omaha.
- How much needs fixing before new pages can rank at all.
- How quickly your attorneys review drafts.
Here's what the curve looked like for two clients. Westview Law's new domain launched in January 2026 and brought in 46 to 62 clicks a month through the spring. After the May rebuild it reached 271 clicks in June, 531 in July and 757 in August. Burg & Brock's new site went live on June 2, 2026, and monthly clicks went from 304 in May to 698 in August. Both are measured in Google Search Console, and neither is a forecast for your firm.
For what you should expect to see in months one, two and three, read how long it takes to see results from a law firm marketing agency.
How to measure law firm SEO ROI
Early indicators of performance are rankings and traffic but the key metric that tells you whether Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is working well is Cost Per Signed Case (CPSC). You only measure this CPSC if each phone call and form submission can be directly linked back to that specific page that generated them.
-
Track every lead to its source
Track calls based on different channels and collect forms recording pages that people land on along with referring sources. This includes anyone who comes from AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude as well.
-
Record what happens at intake
In your CRM or case management system: consultation booked, case signed, case declined. Without this step, marketing data stops at the phone call.
-
Add up the full cost
SEO fees, content, and any website work in the same period. Leave out unrelated spend so the number means something.
-
Divide, then compare
Total SEO cost divided among all signed cases resulting from organic search results gives you a cost per signed case. Then compare that cost with the fees those signed cases generate to figure out the return.
SEO performance is slow so you should look at results quarterly rather than weekly; we see that cases signed in month seven often began with articles published in month three. Our law firm SEO ROI calculator computes results based on your own numbers and no other data.
"Every marketing dollar should trace back to a signed case. When one doesn't, we change the plan."
Matt Khorsandi, Founder & CEO, GLP Marketing
That's why we report on calls, consultations and cases rather than just positions. For companies wanting to see things consistently through intake and case handling, our operational intelligence work links into the systems that they already have in place.
What law firm SEO costs, and why
We don't publish a price list, because two firms rarely need the same work. These are the factors that move the number:
- Practice and market. Personal injury in a large metro takes more content and more links than estate planning in a mid-size city.
- Where the site starts. The cost of rebuilding a site is higher upfront compared to doing a tune up. For example, Westview Law had a complete rebuild that resulted in 95 pages and Burg & Brock moved from just one landing page to over 250 pages.
- Offices and markets. Each real office needs its own Business Profile, citations and location page.
- Languages. A bilingual site is close to two content programs, each with its own review.
- Content volume. How many pages and articles a month, and how much attorney time goes into review.
- Scope. SEO alone, or SEO with paid search, intake and reporting run by one Consulting CMO.
Engagements run on a monthly retainer. Our how we work page explains the engagement step by step. For the wider budget, see our posts on building a law firm marketing budget and what a law firm website costs, or the full channel view on our law firm marketing page.

How to choose a law firm SEO company
Most firms talk to three or four agencies before they sign. These questions separate them quickly:
- If we leave, who owns the website, the content, the analytics and the Google Business Profile? The answer should be you.
- Can you show Search Console data for a law firm client, with dates, instead of a traffic chart with no axis?
- Do your reports go as far as calls, consultations and signed cases, or stop at rankings?
- Who checks content against our state's attorney advertising rules before it goes live?
- How many firms in our practice area and city do you already work with?
- What exactly happens in the first 30 days, in writing?
Step away from sure first page rankings, lengthy contracts that charge termination fees, link packages sold by the hundred, and sites made up of hundreds of nearly identical local pages. Google calls those pages 'doorway pages' according to their policies.
We have a full checklist for choosing a law firm SEO company here: how to choose a law firm SEO company. We also discussed aspects of choosing legal marketing agencies in an earlier piece: choosing a legal marketing agency. If you want to get to know who's doing this work, check out our team.
Common questions

What makes GLP different from other SEO agencies?
We combine use of AI and automation with our team to complete more SEO tasks per client. We base every decision on data rather than relying on intuition. Adding in real time reports and direct communication along with a team that specializes in law leads to a partner for growth instead of just another vendor.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on your practice area, market competition, and growth goals. We tailor every engagement. Book a no-obligation strategy call to get a custom quote and see exactly what we'd do for your firm.
How long until I see results?
Sites that already have traffic and domain authority usually move up significantly within about 60 to 90 days. Sites that are brand new or those in very competitive markets take longer. We display rankings that changed from month to month so you can assess your own progress.
Do you work with firms outside of California?
Absolutely. We work with law firms across the United States and Canada. Our geo-targeting systems are built specifically for multi-market legal practices.
What practice areas do you specialize in?
We focus deeply on different areas of law such as personal injury law, family law, lemon law, employment law, and estate law, along with other local legal matters. We create content and strategies built by people who really understand what kind of searches and decisions legal clients make.
What is law firm SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?
It's the same discipline applied to a field with stricter rules. Google treats legal topics as Your Money or Your Life content, so pages need attorney review, real credentials and accurate procedure. State bar advertising rules limit what the copy can promise. And most legal searches are local, so the Google Business Profile and the map pack carry far more weight than they do for an online store.
Do you guarantee first-page rankings?
No. Google's own guidance for site owners, Do you need an SEO?, says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and an agency that promises one is guessing or gaming something. We commit to the work that moves rankings and to reporting that shows which pages bring in calls and consultations. If you're comparing agencies, our guide on choosing a law firm SEO company lists the other promises to watch for.
How is AI search changing SEO for lawyers?
Now people ask questions that used to go in a search box to Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and ChatGPT. These tools pull quotes from just a few sources. What hasn't really changed is that pages need to be crawlable and indexed and well written. What's more important now is that answers be clear and direct near the top of the page and that firm facts be consistent wherever they're found. We have a page about AI SEO for law firms that talks about how we monitor and improve those citations.
Should we hire an agency or do SEO in-house?
Some companies perform quite well when they have their own marketer on staff. Larger firms that have only one practice area and one target market are good candidates. Staffing is tough because it takes different types of skills: technical SEO, consistent content creation with attorney review, and link building. Many firms employ an in house coordinator who does intake and reviews but outsource the other pieces. Regardless of whether they use internal people or an outside firm, they need to take ownership of their site, analytics and Google Business Profile.
What's the difference between law firm SEO and PPC?
PPC lets you place your ads at the very top for as long as you pay for them. This can result in phone calls within days. SEO gets rankings that continue on their own once you're done with the work and this takes months to develop. Most companies use both: they use PPC ads especially for urgent searches and higher value keywords while SEO builds, and use SEO to lower cost per case over time. You can check out our page for law firm PPC.
How do you measure whether SEO is working?
We start by reporting impressions, rankings and indexed pages as reported in Google Search Console at an early stage. Then we track clicks and phone calls for each page using call tracking and tagged forms. We also document consultations and signed cases from intake records which helps us compute cost per signed case. The law firm SEO ROI calculator we use does all the math using your own numbers.
